My maternal grandfather - Natarajan became critical last week and was hospitalized. He finally is doing well with the help of his 3 sons (their wives) and daughter (and her husband). It was a very trying week for them and for us here (in states). The only thing I could do was pray, hope for the best and call often to support those who were caring for him.
I got word yesterday that he is recovering and back to his old antics.
As I have gotten older, I have realized that family and relations are as important (if not more) as work and science.
Ran some quick stat on prior earthquakes in Italy based on ANSA’s data. Ofcourse, I could have dug a little deeper to get more details on the quakes, but wanted to post a parallel coordinates plot to see the relative impacts..

The way to read this is follow the place/color from legend starting with year. So green line is for L’Aquila which is the recent quake from this month. You just follow the green line to other features to see its relative impact on death and overall effects (homeless, displaced, injured etc.). For those that stop without any affected #s, there was no data available.
As you can see, although the richter scale was high for this go around, the relative impact is lower compared to the ones from the past 3 events.
